The US house speaker Nancy Pelosi said she wanted to punch Donald Trump and would be happy to go to jail for it, new footage filmed during the Jan 6 riots has revealed.
A video obtained by CNN shows the moment the 82-year-old found out that the then-president was considering joining his supporters at the Capitol during the mass unrest on Jan 6, 2021.
“I hope he comes, I’m going to punch him out,” she said. “I’ve been waiting for this. For trespassing on the Capitol grounds, I’m going to punch him out. And I’m going to go to jail, and I’m going to be happy.”
It came as Mr Trump was on Thursday subpoenaed by the congressional committee looking into the events of Jan 6, setting up a potentially climactic showdown over his culpability for the US Capitol riot.
After the hearing, in which Republican Liz Cheney described Mr Trump as a “key player” from whom they “must seek testimony under oath,” the former president took to his Truth Social network to blast the proceedings.
“Why didn’t the Unselect Committee ask me to testify months ago? Why did they wait until the very end, the final moments of their last meeting? Because the Committee is a total ‘BUST’ that has only served to further divide our Country which, by the way, is doing very badly – A laughing stock all over the World?” he wrote.
He did not comment on whether he would comply with the subpoena. If he does not, he could be criminally charged and face a prison sentence.
