Two Liberty football players to transfer, citing ‘racial insensitivity’ and ‘cultural’ incompetence

Two Liberty University football players announced Monday they’re leaving the team and transferring schools due to “racial insensitivity” and “cultural incompetence.” Both Black players made their decisions public over social media.

Cornerback Tayvion Land wrote on Twitter that the university’s leadership was at fault.

“Unfortunately, due to the racial insensitivity displayed by leadership at Liberty University, I have decided to enter my name into the transfer portal and no longer be a student-athlete at Liberty University,” he wrote. “I pray that I am able to be provided with (an) opportunity at a new school that respects my culture and provides a comfortable environment.”

Cornerback Tre Clark wrote on Twitter that his decision to transfer was “simply bigger than football.”

Clark wrote: “Due to the cultural (incompetence) within multiple levels of leadership, it does not line up with my code of ethics. So therefore I had to do what I felt like was right in my heart, and I pray that you support me and pray for me as I find a new home to further my education and football career.”

A four-star prospect in the class of 2019, Land was the highest-rated recruit to ever sign with Liberty. He chose the program over offers from several schools in the SEC. Land and Clark held key roles on the 2019 defense and both were expected to start in 2020.

Earlier this month Liberty women’s basketball player Asia Todd chose to transfer, citing similar reasons related to racial insensitivity.
