Mohamed Salah, Divock Origi propel Liverpool past Tottenham in Champions League final

This time, it was all Liverpool.

After coming up short in last year’s UEFA Champions League final, the Reds sealed the deal in their return trip to the title game Saturday, defeating Premier League foe Tottenham Hotspur, 2-0.

The win marked Liverpool’s sixth Champions League title, and its first since 2005. Only Spanish team Real Madrid (13) and Italian side A.C. Milan (seven) have more wins in what is the most prestigious annual soccer tournament in Europe.

With the victory, the Reds also avenged their 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in last year’s final.

In a tournament that featured plenty of thrilling comebacks and memorable highlights, the final was relatively straightforward.

Liverpool’s star forward Mohamed Salah converted a penalty kick in the opening minutes after Moussa Sissoko was whistled for a handball in the penalty box. Salah, who missed the majority of last year’s final after suffering an injury early in the game, deposited the ball behind a diving Hugo Lloris to put the Reds in front.

Tottenham tried to claw its way back, but with little luck in the first half. The second brought a few more chances, with Heung-min Son among those applying pressure, but Liverpool managed to put the game away a few minutes before stoppage time. Substitute Divock Origi collected a bouncing ball in the penalty box and smashed it in to secure the win.
