Man City women edge Man Utd in front of 31,000

LONDON: Manchester City´s women got the better of Manchester United with a 1-0 win in the first ever Manchester derby in the Women´s Super League (WSL) in front of a crowd of over 31,000 at the Etihad on Saturday.

The attendance smashed the previous record for a WSL match in the first of a serious of matches that will take place in the stadiums normally reserved for men´s games this season.

Caroline Weir scored the only goal with a stunning strike from long range three minutes into the second-half for the hosts.

However, United were far from outclassed in their first top-flight match after the Red Devils formed a women´s team just 18 months ago.

The WSL are hoping to cash in on the wave of interest that accompanied England´s run to the semi-finals of the World Cup this summer.

An even bigger crowd is expected when Chelsea host Tottenham at Stamford Bridge with free entry meaning over 40,000 tickets were claimed within four days.
