Joe Biden brands Trump supporters as ‘semi-fascist’

Joe Biden accused Donald Trump’s allies of “semi-facism” in a fiery address as he sought to build momentum on the back of his highest approval rating in a year.

The US president attacked the “extreme” ideology underpinning Mr Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (Maga) movement, warning it “embraced political violence” and imperilled American democracy.

“What we’re seeing now is either the beginning or the death knell of an extreme Maga philosophy,” Mr Biden told donors during a $1 million (£850,000) Democratic fundraiser on Thursday night.

“It’s not just Trump, it’s the entire philosophy that underpins the – I’m going to say something – it’s like semi-fascism.”

The incendiary rhetoric marked some of the strongest language yet by Mr Biden, who pledged to govern as a bipartisan president but has become increasingly frustrated by Republican opposition in Congress.

He expressed astonishment at the direction of the Republican Party later on Thursday night as he staged his first rally in the run-up to November’s critical midterm elections
