Donald Trump to be subpoenaed to testify over Capitol riots

Donald Trump was last night subpoenaed by a congressional committee setting up a potentially climactic showdown over his culpability for the US Capitol riot.

Failure to appear before the committee could lead to the former president being criminally charged with contempt of Congress, which carries a jail sentence of up to a year.

In the virtually unprecedented move the January 6 Committee demanded that Mr Trump provide documents and testimony under oath.

It was the culmination of the committee’s work over the last year to establish that the 76-year-old was to blame for the chaos that followed his election defeat.

In an immediate response, Mr Trump said: “Why didn’t the Unselect Committee ask me to testify months ago? Why did they wait until the very end, the final moments of their last meeting?

“Because the Committee is a total ‘BUST’ that has only served to further divide our Country which, by the way, is doing very badly.”

Mr Trump added that the “reason for what took place on January 6th” was the “massive voter fraud which took place during the 2020 Presidential Election”.

He has repeatedly dismissed the Democrat-dominated committee as a “political witch hunt”.
