Donald Trump’s presidency: The best and worst moments from his four years as US President

Since his victory in 2016 and inauguration in 2017, Donald Trump has been at the helm of one of the most unconventional and eventful presidencies in recent memory.

From the inauguration crowd size controversy, to meeting Kim Jong-un and swearing in three Supreme Court justices, Mr Trump ploughed ahead with his unique style of leadership which sometimes stumped even the most seasoned of Washington correspondents.

To round off his term in office, Mr Trump faced both an impeachment and a devastating pandemic in the months leading up to the 2020 election.

For a refresher of all the key moments that have defined President Trump’s time in the White House, watch the video above.

What did Trump achieve during his presidency?

Throughout the course of his Presidency, Trump was never been far from the headlines and has had significant policy impacts.

He fired FBI Director James Comey after describing the investigation into alleged ties with Russia as a “made up story”.

On foreign policy, Mr Trump tore up the US nuclear deal with Iran, while brokering a historic peace deal between Israel and Bahrain which followed a similar accord with the United Arab Emirates.

Mr Trump cut deals and imposed tariffs that incentivised employers to create jobs in America, rather than outsourcing abroad in the face of growing hostility China.

He had achieved a proud presidential record, including an unemployment rate at a 50-year low of 3.5 per cent, although this was left in tatters by the pandemic. A brutal April-June quarter saw the world’s biggest economy shrink by a record 9.4 per cent.

However, Mr Trump would go on to credit himself with a “Trump super recovery” after almost half of all job losses from the coronavirus pandemic were recovered.

Trump’s best moments as US President

President Trump ordered a missile strike on Syria in 2018 in a rebuke to the leadership of Bashar al-Assad and his attacks on his own people.

Mr Trump said that Assad’s policy “crosses many, many lines” in terms of foreign policy, and he demonstrated a ruthless streak that has also been exhibited in his policy towards Iran.

The president has also paid an official state visit to the UK, and reached out to Kim Jong-un, who he met firstly in Vietnam and then in the demilitarised zone.

Then in early 2020, the Senate ultimately rejected articles of impeachment that were levelled at Mr Trump, who brandished a copy of The Washington Post with the headline “Trump acquitted” in celebration.

Only last month the President contracted coronavirus, which resulted in a stay at Walter Reed hospital “out of an abundance of caution”.

Having recovered, he returned to a scintillating blitz of election rallies on the campaign tail, and said of Covid-19: “Don’t let it dominate you.”
