Cubs rookie Christopher Morel meets 81-year-old super fan in viral moment

Chicago Cubs fan Judy Aldrich carries the team’s signature “W” flag with her “all over the place.”

The Chicago-born grandmother, along with the rest of the city, jubilantly watched in 2016 when the Cubs won the World Series for the first time in 108 years. Six years later, the lifelong fan is still winning.

Aldrich, 81, attended the Cubs game Monday against the Miami Marlins in Florida and met rookie outfielder Christopher Morel. The video she posted to her TikTok account with the username @that_lit_grandmaa went viral and received more than 400,000 views in two days.

“I am 81 years old and I have been a fan forever,” Aldrich told USA TODAY Sports. “This made my whole year.”

In the clip, Aldrich stood at the end of the field saying, “I love you,” while Morel, 23, ran to her.

“I love you, too,” he responded, smiling at the woman whose white hair peeked out of her blue Cubs hat next to her dangly Cubs earrings.

Aldrich said the necklaces Morel wears are made by women in his home country of the Dominican Republic, so she asked if there was a website where she could buy one. The rookie reached up to his own necklace, pulled it off and handed it to her.

“Oh, you are the best,” Aldrich said. “You don’t have any idea.”

As she continued to thank him, he said, “Thank you. Thank you for supporting me.”

“Christopher is my favorite player because he is such a lovable, kind, charismatic, and enthusiastic player,” Aldrich said. “He loves the fans and always exhibits such a great attitude.”

Even though the Cubs are out of playoff contention this season, missing the postseason for the third time in four years, their rising star showed there’s still something to root for.
