Bill Self on job status as NCAA investigates Kansas? ‘I’m really not concerned’

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas basketball coach Bill Self said Wednesday that he’s unconcerned about what the NCAA investigation means from a personal standpoint.

He’s not concerned about the status of his job and wondering about the legacy he leaves is not even on his radar.

“As far as my legacy or whatever, that doesn’t even register with me,” Self said at the Big 12’s annual men’s basketball media day Wednesday at the Sprint Center. “I probably know me better than anyone knows me. I know that we have to get through this, be very happy when gets behind us.

“My legacy is the least of my concern right now. I just want to do the best job I can coaching at a place that I absolutely love.”

Kansas received an NCAA notice of allegations in late September, in the wake of accusations of major violations tied to recruiting. There also was a responsibility charge against Self.

“By the NCAA’s own admission through its public statements early this summer, it’s no secret that there is tremendous pressure on the NCAA to respond to the federal court proceedings involving college basketball,” Self said in September. “Compelled to reassure member institutions and the general public that it can police its member institutions, the NCAA enforcement staff has responded in an unnecessarily aggressive manner in submitting today’s unsubstantiated Notice of Allegations, and I, as well as the University, will vigorously dispute what has been alleged. …

“In its haste and attempt to regain control, the enforcement staff has created a false narrative regarding me and our basketball program. The narrative is based on innuendo, half-truths, misimpressions and mischaracterizations.

“In reality, we all know there is only one version of the truth. The truth is based on verifiable facts, and I am confident the facts we will demonstrate in our case will expose the inaccuracies of the enforcement staff’s narrative.”

FIGHT COMING: Bill Self said Kansas intends to contest NCAA allegations

MESSAGE SENT: NCAA to Bill Self: You’re a cheater and we want you out

When asked about the “false narrative” statement Wednesday, Self said: “The message, if you read the statement, which you obviously did, was one in which I made the statement, then I also said that we cannot comment to any details or anything going on with the allegations due to the NCAA process. I’m going to follow that. I’m going to stick to that.

“Certainly, the things that you just asked will be things that will be answered at the appropriate time, whenever it can be answered. Certainly, this is not the time for that.”

Self also said he is not concerned about the investigation’s impact could have on keeping the job he has held since 2003-04 season.

“I’m really not concerned about that — the job status,” he said Wednesday. “I know that our chancellor and our athletic director — the basketball program — are totally aligned in this.
