It’s official: Big 12 Conference football workouts can begin June 15.
The league’s board of directors on Friday approved a phased-in approach for athletes to begin “voluntary activities related to sports participation.” Football players can begin voluntary workouts at campus athletic facilities, where they will work with the program’s strength and conditioning staff but not coaches.
Volleyball, soccer and cross country athletes can start voluntary workouts on July 1. All other Big 12 athletes can return to campus for voluntary sports-related activities on July 15.
Also on Friday, the Southeastern Conference announced that voluntary on-campus workouts could begin on June 8.
“This phased approach is intended to permit gradual adoption of best practices for mitigation of COVID-19, as well as ensuring a safe environment and appropriately prepared facilities,” the Big 12 said in a statement.
