Texas Tech’s quarterback room will be one person smaller in the spring.

Jett Duffey, who is set to graduate this weekend, elected to enter the transfer portal, a Texas Tech official confirmed Friday with the Avalanche-Journal.

As a redshirt junior, Duffey started the season fourth on the depth chart — behind Alan Bowman, Jackson Tyner and Maverick McIvor. Bowman (shoulder/collarbone) and McIvor (foot) suffered injuries, while Tyner did not perform well in his first start against Oklahoma on the road on Sept 28.

Duffey replaced Tyner against the Sooners and then started the team’s final eight games. He threw for 2,840 yards, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions. Duffey also ran for 369 yards to become the first Red Raiders quarterback to lead the squad in rushing since 1973.

As a graduate transfer, he is expected to be immediately eligible at his new school.

During his two prior seasons, Duffey threw for 1,237 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions until upping his numbers with head coach Matt Wells and offensive coordinator David Yost in their first season in Lubbock.

Duffey amassed a 3-8 record as a starter with Texas Tech and leaves the program with 3,678 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He added 601 rushing yards and five scores.

As a freshman, Duffey redshirted before he was suspended from the university and football program during the spring and summer of 2017. A Texas Tech Title IX hearing panel sided with a woman who alleges Duffey had sexually assaulted her twice when she was too incapacitated to consent, according to a disposition letter provided to A-J Media following an open records request back in January 2017.

Duffey alleged the sex was consensual. A Lubbock County grand jury failed to find sufficient evidence to prosecute the case.

Bowman is expected to be the starter next season. He made appeared in three games before his injury and elected to redshirt. McIvor also will redshirt after missing the entire season with a broken foot.

Frenship quarterback Donovan Smith is expected to join Texas Tech as part of its 2020 Signing Class. The senior is expected to sign his national letter of intent Dec. 18 — during the early signing period for football.
