The legend of Joe Burrow keeps growing.

Not only is he a virtual lock to hoist the Heisman Trophy next week, but his LSU Tigers have a chance to guarantee a College Football Playoff berth with a victory Saturday over the Georgia Bulldogs in the Southeastern Conference Championship game.

It’s a contest Burrow should be prepared for — he apparently didn’t have a cell phone this week, Tigers coach Ed Orgeron told reporters Friday.

“(LSU special assistant to the head coach Derek Ponamsky) told me last night that Joe’s mama and daddy was calling him, and he wouldn’t answer the phone. I wanted to know what’s going on,” Orgeron began. “Well, Joe’s phone broke, and the mom and dad said, ‘We’re going to get you one.’ He said, ‘I don’t need a phone. I got a game to play this week.’ So that goes to show you the focus and the leadership of that young man and what he’s done.”

The original question posed to Orgeron that led to the anecdote revolved around helping Burrow handle the Heisman buzz he’s received entering the game.

“Joe and I are very close,” Orgeron said. “I don’t have much to say to Joe.”

With Burrow steering the ship, LSU’s offense has become one of the nation’s most explosive attacks. Burrow, an Ohio State transfer playing in his second season in Baton Rouge, completed 78.3 percent of his passes and threw for nearly 4,366 yards with 44 touchdowns and six interceptions.
